San Francisco’s new Commuter Benefits Ordinance allows employers and workers to tap into an existing federal program to pay for transit passes.
As of August 18, 2008, San Francisco requires all employers that have 20 or more employees (including part-time workers) to have a transit benefit program in place. These programs allow you to take advantage of of federal tax legislation that can save you up to 40% on your commute costs. See www.commuterbenefits.org for more details.
Employers save up to 9% on payroll taxes and employees save up to 40% on their transit costs. The benefit works like other pre-tax plans such as retirement, dependent care, and medical reimbursement, except that it’s much simpler.
The $120 monthly pretax wage can be used on the Bauer’s Wi-Drive transportation program.
Commuter Checks (www.commutercheck.com) are accepted to pay for fares on Bauer's Wi-Drive transportation.
You can redeem your voucher(s) at either the main offices at Pier 27 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, or you can give it to the attendant on your bus. The attendant will in turn be able to place the value of the voucher(s) onto your Bauer's VIP Transit Card.
If you participate in the Commuter Check Direct Program, you can get your Bauer's VIP Transit Card loaded directly for you pre-tax account.
